Among the many waterfalls in the Nikko area—so numerous that the region is said to have “48 waterfalls”—Kegon Falls is by far the most famous.
Fed by the waters of Lake Chuzenji, the falls plunge dramatically 97 meters down a sheer cliff, offering a breathtaking display of both the power and elegance of nature.
From the observation deck, which is accessible by elevator, visitors can experience the waterfall up close, where the thunderous roar and exploding spray create an overwhelming sense of power.
Each season offers a unique view:
In May, the falls are framed by vibrant fresh greenery;
in June, flocks of house martins flit about the misty cascade;
and from January to February, delicate side streams known as the “Twelve Mini Falls” freeze into blue ice, transforming the scene into a magical winter spectacle.
