Lake Chuzenji

Lake Chuzenji, located at the entrance to Oku-Nikko, spans approximately 25 kilometers in circumference and reaches a maximum depth of 163 meters. It is believed to have formed around 20,000 years ago when lava from the eruption of Mount Nantai dammed the valley.

With its ever-changing seasonal beauty, the lake became a popular summer retreat for foreign diplomats and dignitaries from the Meiji era through the early Showa period. That serene charm continues to this day.

Nestled at the foot of Mount Nantai, the tranquil lakeside offers a variety of scenic views throughout the year—especially stunning are the azaleas in early summer and the vibrant autumn foliage.
A leisurely sightseeing boat cruise is also highly recommended, offering breathtaking views from the water. During the fall season, a special “Autumn Foliage Cruise” route is also available.
