Ryuokyo Gorge

Ryuokyo Gorge offers breathtaking scenery, where dramatic rock formations, the clear flow of the Kinugawa River, and lush surrounding forests come together in perfect harmony.

It is believed that around 22 million years ago, volcanic rock erupted from a submarine volcano and was later eroded by the Kinugawa River, forming the spectacular landscape we see today.

The name “Ryuokyo”, meaning “Dragon King Gorge,” was given in 1950 (Showa 25), inspired by the dramatic, winding rock formations that resemble a dragon writhing through the mountains.

The gorge stretches approximately 3 kilometers between Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen.
From the Kawaji side, a well-maintained 7 km walking trail offers a relatively gentle hike that takes about 3 to 4 hours, making it perfect for a relaxing nature walk.
